What is ZICO?

ZICO is the ultimate hydration drink. Made with pure coconut water, ZICO has more potassium than a banana, potent antioxidants, and its light, delicious taste comes with only 60, nutrition-packed calories.

How do you pronounce ZICO?

“Zee-Koh”

Is ZICO 100% Natural?

Yes. Even our flavors are all-natural.

When should I drink ZICO?

Anytime! Though its wonderful nutritional characteristics are most evident before, during or after exercise, coconut water is increasingly being used in smoothies and as a mixer for cocktails.

Where do our coconuts come from?

ZICO is continuously searching the world for the best-tasting and most nutritious coconuts. There’s no question that coconuts from different regions offer different taste characteristics and different nutritional profiles due to soil and climate conditions. Therefore, we must constantly adapt and work toward providing the most fresh-tasting coconuts available.

Currently, the ZICO 11-oz. and 1-liter products source from Thailand. Thai coconuts, in our opinion, are the highest quality, the most nutritious and have a nuttier taste profile. Thai coconuts are also those most commonly found fresh in grocery produce sections, so this allows ZICO to offer consumers the same taste as the freshest available coconuts on the market.

The ZICO 14-oz. products are a blend of Thai and Indonesian coconuts, specially chosen and blended, for superior sports recovery as they contain sodium levels comparable to traditional sports drinks.

Is ZICO pasteurized?

ZICO’s coconut water maintains its amazing nutritional qualities and taste by using a new process called “flash pasteurization”. This protects the nutrition while keeping you safe from foreign substances.

How is ZICO Fat and Cholesterol free?

Our coconut water doesn’t contain the fat of coconut milk because ZICO’s coconut water comes from young coconuts before they develop the white meat that contains the fat and cholesterol in mature coconuts.

Why is Potassium good for me?

Potassium not only stops and prevents muscle cramps, it also helps you recover more quickly from exercise and the stresses of daily life.

Why is ZICO moving toward a bottle?

We know that ZICO consumers lead active lifestyles and many have specifically requested that we make ZICO available in a bottle. Additionally, based on extensive consumer research and focus groups, we found that there were many potential coconut water consumers that were not currently purchasing any brands in large part because of the packaging. ZICO in a bottle meets current consumers' needs and brings more consumers into the category by offering a solution for on-the-go consumption, including durability (to throw in a backpack or gym bag), resealability, the ability to place the product on ice and product fit for car cup holders.

How does ZICO in a bottle compare to other coconut waters in bottles or cans?

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first all-natural, aseptic bottled coconut water in the world, which means it has all the same benefits of ZICO in a carton. There are some coconut waters in PET bottles (water bottles), but they are either frozen and thawed, giving them a very limited shelf life or hotfilled, which completely changes the taste profile and nutritional benefits by adding high levels of acid. Canned coconut waters are packed using a high-heat, long-time processing system called retort which completely changes the taste profile and damages the nutritional properties.

Is the ZICO bottle recyclable?

Yes, the ZICO bottle is recyclable and in fact, 30% of the bottle is made from recycled content. The bottles are #2 compatible and all bottles will be marked as such, which means that they can be picked up through most curbside recycling programs.  Currently almost 40% of HDPE bottles are recycled in America today.

What are the health benefits of the bottle (and is it different than the Carton)?

Compared to the carton, ZICO in the bottle has two primary nutritional differences, both of which help make the ZICO bottle ideal for on-the-go, active lifestyle hydration:

  • Calories: Due to our choice of coconut water utilized for the bottles, the bottle has 20% fewer calories per oz. than the carton
  • Bottle = 60 calories for a 14 oz serving
  • Carton = 60 calories for an 11.2 oz serving
  • Sodium: The bottle contains 180 mg of sodium for a 14 oz serving (12.8 mg/oz) compared to 60 mg of sodium in the 11.2 oz carton (5.4 mg/oz).  Sodium plays a critical role in promoting optimal rehydration during prolonged exercise by preventing muscle cramps or weakness and aiding in fluid retention.  Sodium is also known to stimulate the thirst mechanism, further aiding in the prevention of dehydration.

What is the bottle’s shelf life?

The bottle has a shelf life of 12 months, consistent with the ZICO carton product. However, because the bottle products are produced domestically, there are no delays due to international shipping and customs, allowing the bottles to have approximately 2 additional months of “usable” shelf life than the carton line.

What does “from concentrate” mean?

"From concentrate” simply means that the coconut water has had most of the water removed during the production process so that it could be more easily transported and stored, and then has had water added back into it later in the production process to bring it back to the same nutritional profile as the original coconut water.  Removing water and then adding it back in does nothing to reduce the benefits of the coconut water.

Where does the concentrate come from?

Similar to ZICO’s carton product, ZICO concentrate is produced by hand-harvesting the most delicious and nutritious young green coconuts from trees around the world. For ZICO in the bottle, we’ve selected a unique blend of coconut waters from Thailand and Indonesia to achieve a unique, consistent taste, and an even better nutritional profile and lower calorie count. By sourcing the best coconuts from around the world, ZICO helps to ensure greater quality and flexibility throughout the supply chain.

Where is the bottle produced?

In the USA. Given the recent supply challenges within the coconut water category, ZICO proactively set out to establish greater supply chain flexibility.  Therefore one of the benefits of the bottle is that it allows ZICO production flexibility within a number of different facilities within our manufacturer network, thereby helping to ensure product supply, eventually across the globe.

What is the bottle made of?

The ZICO bottle is HDPE, which stands for High Density Polyethylene.  The biggest use of the HDPE package is milk bottles, but HDPE is also used for many other beverages and liquid products as well.  30% of the ZICO bottle in particular is made from recycled content.

What is the environmental impact of the bottle compared to the carton?

Although some consumers may perceive the new ZICO bottles to be less environmentally friendly than the paper carton container, the reality is that the lifecycle of the bottles is actually more environmentally friendly than the carton for the following reasons:
ZICO bottles are produced and filled domestically, saving shipment of bulky packaging materials to/from production facilities around the world
• The coconut water is from concentrate, offering the same great taste and nutritional properties while reducing the environmental impact of global shipping by reducing the liquid bulk to be shipped (concentrate takes up much less volume than water)
ZICO bottles are HDPE and 40% of HDPE bottles are recycled in America today
• Although cartons are made from paperboard, a completely renewable and stable source of materials, only 20% of recycling centers can process cartons in the US
• 30% of ZICO’s bottle comes from recycled content.

Is there BPA in the ZICO bottles?

BPA stands for Bisphenol-A and it has historically been used in linings for canned food, infant formula and plastic baby bottles and toys.  It has been publicized as having potential health risks, especially when exposed to fetuses, infants and children.  However, BPA has never been used in HDPE bottles – at any time, at any place.  To call ZICO bottles “BPA free” would imply that at some point they might have contained BPA (which they never did).  Therefore the appropriate response is that ZICO bottles do not contain any BPA.

Is the bottle produced using the same method as the carton?

ZICO in a bottle is still processed using the same gentle flash-pasteurization system that ensures it retains the inherent great taste, nutritional properties and low-acidity level inherent in coconut water.

Is ZICO good for kids?

Yes!! All of its nutrition and low sugar content are so much better than the colored sugar waters most kids find in their lunch boxes. Help put your kids on the path to a lifetime of good health by providing them with products like ZICO that have low sugar content and plenty of nutritional value.
